Real Lichen in Long Lake forest

So much different growth going on here in one place. Its not my intention to try to reproduce this with crochet, but its just so rich and fertile.... an inspiration.

Can Picasso BE a muse for a woman?

Antique Gold-Finish Metal Typewriter Key Charm Mix from Oriental Trading (that I got ages ago.)

Still Life with a Bottle of Rum, 1911

Went to the Metropolitan Museum the other day and dug this Picasso "high cubist" painting. The letters painted here have confused experts. The Met Museum notes:
"This is one of the first works in which Picasso included letter forms. It has been suggested that the ones shown at the left, LETR, refer to Le Torero, the magazine for bullfighting fans—Picasso being one of them—but they might simply be a pun on lettre, French for 'word'."
Another maven says they are the letters on the rum bottle.
Doesn't matter because their presence works. Shall I be inspired and include these typewriter keys in one of my compositions?

Gorgeous colors

These hand dyed crochet thread are going to become some very groovy fungus and lichen, created in Long Lake, NY. Two weeks by the lake, coming up!

My "Yarn Talk" at Knitty City Last Night

My darling friend, Cynthia showed up, Goddess Bless her.
That was it. Showed her my prepared powerpoint slide show.
No promotion yields no audience.
But I don't care. My work is my play is my work - the ideal combination!

My crochet creations featured at Knitty City

Knitty City, the yarn store on West 79th Street, NYC, declares that July is Crochet Month. I have been invited to give a talk about my crochet mushrooms, etc. and about yarn bombing. Thursday July 8th, 6-8 pm. Here is the window display of my work. I'm delighted.

Mushrooms in Central Park

I'm in love with another crochet artist

Joana Vasconcelos

"The nature of Joana Vasconcelos' creative process is based on the appropriation, decontextualisation and subversion of pre-existent objects
and everyday realities."

"They're hooked on baseball!" - corny quote from Daily News

Over 400 Mets fans set Guinness World Record for most people crocheting in the same place.
Well, at least they have something fun to do while at the ball park.

Sweet little video: How Knitting and Crocheting Make Us Better

This is a video from Lion Brand Yarn. They asked their customers how knitting and crocheting makes them better, and the answers are on this video. I wasn't involved, but I like it.

Bleached Crochet Coral Reef

This photograph is of the bleached crochet coral reef, currently on display at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. I'm finally getting a chance to think about combining my crochet with my job... librarian at the New York Hall of Science.

The Hall is hosting MAKERS FAIRE this September and inviting us to submit proposals for a Hall wide project. Creating a crochet coral reef would be sublime, but we don't have a enough needle women there. I'm thinking of proposing some kind of reef of recycled materials that we all can make in our own manner.

Postscript on July 21, 2010: Unfortunately, I am unable to create a Recycled Coral Reef for Makers Faire. They laid off my Assistant and I just don't have the time. I'll contribute my fungus and lichen instead. It's too friggin bad that it turned out this way, but Oh well...

See the section that follows this to learn more about the history of the Crochet Coral Reef...
