Sweet little video: How Knitting and Crocheting Make Us Better

This is a video from Lion Brand Yarn. They asked their customers how knitting and crocheting makes them better, and the answers are on this video. I wasn't involved, but I like it.

Bleached Crochet Coral Reef

This photograph is of the bleached crochet coral reef, currently on display at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. I'm finally getting a chance to think about combining my crochet with my job... librarian at the New York Hall of Science.

The Hall is hosting MAKERS FAIRE this September and inviting us to submit proposals for a Hall wide project. Creating a crochet coral reef would be sublime, but we don't have a enough needle women there. I'm thinking of proposing some kind of reef of recycled materials that we all can make in our own manner.

Postscript on July 21, 2010: Unfortunately, I am unable to create a Recycled Coral Reef for Makers Faire. They laid off my Assistant and I just don't have the time. I'll contribute my fungus and lichen instead. It's too friggin bad that it turned out this way, but Oh well...

See the section that follows this to learn more about the history of the Crochet Coral Reef...

Crochet Coral Reef

The following photographs were taken of the 2008 Crochet Coral Reef displayed at the World Financial Center and in some storefront windows at NYU. It has been traveling the globe as an exhibit since then.

"The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is a woolly celebration of the intersection of higher geometry and feminine handicraft, and a testimony to the disappearing wonders of the marine world."

Instead of saying "feminine handicraft", I would call it art.

What is illusion and what is reality?

This vine was designed to add some flair to this boring gray chain link fence in my sister's backyard.

PLARN: Plastic yarn made from old bags from the store - made into another bag...

Plarny Plarn Plarn, how very greeny green green!

One of this blog's "fans" asked me to post answers to these questions:
Was this your idea or did you see it somewhere else?
First saw plarn used in the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project several years ago. A cool current site for bag making is My Recycled Bags.com

I made up my own pattern, using the examples as models. I love the green idea and I think it looks pretty.

Where did the name "plarn" come from?
Plastic + yarn = plarn. Did some research on where and when the name originated, and the answer is… who knows?

Does the bag fold up small enough to keep in your purse for grocery shopping?

No.
I'm guessing it's stronger than a single regular store bag.
Yes.
And the black details... I'm assuming that's from a fancy bag?
Its from a black plastic bag from the liquor store.

Country fungus

At my sister's home in the wilds of Riverhead.
She likes this fungus!

I placed a similar shelf fungus on a tree
outside my NYC apartment building awhile ago.
It's gone, who knows where.
Hope this one will stay put.
I don't think the staples hurt the tree, do you?

Meter Sweater?

What are we going to do about this meter eyesore?
Think I'll be able to make it a sweater?

Peas in a Pod

Choose any amigurumi, I'll make it for you, I offered.
Marilyn looked through the free patterns on the Lion Brand
site and chose these two lovers.
Sure, I agreed... but NO little veil and hat.
Which one do YOU prefer?

Not quite a Golden Retriever

After viewing my blog, my boss kvelled.
"What is your favorite animal?" I asked.
Golden Retriever.
The closest was a Lab pattern from PlanetJune's website.
She dug it.
